We will go to Rio - Guidetti

Lonneke Sloetjes will be one of the Dutch players hoping to guide their team to a third Olympics

Tokyo, Japan, May 12, 2016 - Dutch coach Giovanni Guidetti has spoken of his confidence that his team will be one of the four who will earn tickets to the 2016 Olympic Games at the end of the Rio qualifiers in Japan.

"I believe this team will get Rio," the Italian told nos.nl, though he remains on his guard. "There are many dangerous opponents between, there are no easy games."

The Dutch team has had only a handful of days to prepare, providing challenges for Guidetti.

"We now fly to Japan and we train for the first time all together. Some opponents are already one month completed their league because they find it such an important tournament. The European leagues take no account of this."

"There are played five different styles volleyball during this OCT. That we are not used to, so we will have to adapt to."

The Netherlands have attended two Olympic Games - Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 - but have not featured since then. They had to come through the World Olympic Qualification tournament for Atlanta, finishing second behind Japan and have won at least one set in every match from the last two Qualification tournaments they have participated in.

Guidetti has seen much success since being drafted in as head coach of the Netherlands in 2015, winning the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 2 Finals as well guiding them to the final of the 2015 European Championship where they lost to Russia.
