Overview

Team profile

Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic have appeared twice in the Olympic Games, with finishes of equal-ninth at Sydney 2000 and equal-fifth at London 2012. They managed to progress through the group stage before being defeated in the quarterfinals by eventual silver medallists USA at the last Olympic Games. Building on that performance, they made their way through the first two group stages at the 2014 World Championships but a 3-2 defeat by China in the third group stage denied them a place in the semifinal. They have appeared in every edition of the World Grand Prix since 2004. Their best finish in the event was eighth in 2006 and 2010.

The Queens of the Caribbean had a disappointing campaign at the 2015 World Grand Prix. They finished bottom of Group 1 after losing each of their nine matches, failing to win a set in the process. At the Pan American Games in July 2015, they recovered to take the bronze medal after a win over Puerto Rico. They qualified for their fourth consecutive World Cup by winning the NORCECA Final Four Cup in July. In their debut tournament in 2003 they finished 10th and followed up with ninth place in 2007. Five wins from 11 matches in the 2011 tournament earned them eighth place. In 2015 they finished seventh. At the World Championship in 2014, Dominican Republic reached the third round in Milan but lost to Brazil and China. They ended the tournament in joint-fifth place.

Marcos Kwiek

Marcos Kwiek was appointed Dominican Republic coach in 2008 and his team have qualified for every World Grand Prix since, although he did not lead the team at the 2015 World Grand Prix. He led them to gold at the 2010 Pan American Cup and silvers in 2009, 2011 and 2013. He also steered them to victory at the NORCECA Continental Championship in 2009. The same year they took bronze at the Grand Champions Cup, the team's highest ever finish in an FIVB competition. In 2010 he masterminded their triumph at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Kwiek served as assistant coach of the Brazilian women's team from 2003 to 2007.
