Overview

Team profile

Peru

The 1980s represented a golden age for Peruvian volleyball. The team won silver at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, silver at the 1982 World Championship and bronze at the 1986 World Championship. More recently the team has failed to reach those heights. Their last Olympic appearance was in 2000 and they have not won a World Championship medal since the 1986 bronze. At continental level they have always been a force and have won a medal at every South American Championships since 1951, including a bronze in 2013. They have won the title 12 times, but the most recent triumph was in 1993. At the top level they have appeared in the World Grand Prix four times, and in 2015 they finished sixth in Group 2.

Peru finished second in their pool and went all the way to the final before losing to Kenya at the 2015 World Grand Prix. Peru regularly qualify for the World Cup, having appeared in eight of the 11 editions. Their best World Cup performance was in the inaugural edition in 1973, when they qualified through the group stages and lost to Korea in the bronze medal match. Performances since included three consecutive fifth-place finishes between 1985 and 1991.

Coach

Mauro Marasciulo

Mauro Marasciulo

Brazilian Mauro Marasciulo, who replaced Natalia Malaga as coach of Peru's women's team in January 2015, is looking to make an impact in his first full year as coach. He started by guiding the team to a second-place finish in Group 3 at this year’s World Grand Prix. Marasciulo got a close look at the squad while coaching Colombia's women's team from 2012 to 2014. He is aiming to raise Peru's profile to match that of his former side, as well as Argentina and Venezuela. Marasciulo coached at club level in Italy from 1991 to 2011. There he led Minetti Vicenza to victory at the 2000/01 CEV Women's Challenge Cup and won the 2003/04 Italian Serie A2 title with Terra Sarda Tortoli.
